Un bal russe

Written in the summer of 2019, “Un bal russe” is a commission dedicated to the wind quintet of the “Les Siècles” Orchestra and the clarinet choir “Les Langues de Bois”

This piece is a suite of dances, a tribute to five Russian composers, who have more or less profoundly influenced my musical career. Influences from traditional Eastern European music echo some of their works which, although sometimes written in the 20th century, have become musical “classics”.

This suite is composed of two tender movements, delicate but full of life, referring to Serguei Rachmaninoff and Nikolaï Rimsky-Korsakov, but also of three dances full of dynamism, humor and the sweet madness that one can encounter episodically with Dimitri Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky and Aram Khachaturian.
