BREIZH’MER Variations

Piece, ten minutes, for clarinet choir and drums (and optional bass guitar)

The main idea, as indicated by the title of the piece, BREIZH’MER Variations, is to blend musical influences from two sources: Breizh (Brittany) on the one hand and Klezmer (music of Eastern European Jews) on the other, and to offer variations on these themes.

We will hear:
– a very maritime introduction based on the sounds of birds, waves, wind…
– a stripped-down theme, sung a cappella by the entire orchestra
– a ternary variation in Breton dance mode
– a calmer, more expressive moment in Nigun mode
– a second Breton dance, very lively and spirited
– a Hora, calm but full of character
– and finally, a very dynamic and virtuoso dance in the form of a Freilach typical of Klezmer music.
